Lineup construction is something manager Lou Piniella has fiddled with all year, trying to find the right combination.

One theme of late has been the number of players on base when leadoff man Alfonso Soriano comes to the plate. Last year, Soriano had 70 RBIs in 135 games.

Soriano missed a total of eight weeks this season with two disabled-list stints. In 76 games, he has driven in 61 runs.

Part of the reason is that Piniella has loaded the back end of his lineup with good hitters. For example, Mark DeRosa batted eighth Tuesday night. DeRosa his batting .278 with 14 homers and a .376 on-base percentage.

"We try to put combinations of lineups together that we get contributions from 1-8 or 1-9," Piniella said.

Rich Harden's been as good -- maybe even better -- than the Chicago Cubs expected when they acquired him in a trade from Oakland six weeks ago. Harden allowed two hits in seven innings Tuesday night, striking out 10 and bunting in the go-ahead run for his first major league RBI as the surging Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0.
