If A.J. Burnett is on his way out, he's leaving the Blue Jays in style.

On Tuesday, Burnett struck out a season-high 13 batters in pitching the Jays to a 2-1 victory over the Yankees.

Burnett (16-9) allowed just the one run and five hits over eight innings. Along the way he raised his league-leading strikeout total to 178. Burnett is now tied with the Yankees' Mike Mussina for the second-most victories in the American League.

Burnett, who can opt out of the final two years of his contract at the end of the season, is expected to seek free agency and cash in on the most successful season of his big-league career.

"It certainly looks like A.J. won't be here," manager Cito Gaston said of Burnett recently.

Johnny Damon was left "baffled" by a pair of blunders in the outfield, the latest hit to the New York Yankees' fading playoff hopes. Damon allowed two balls to glance off his glove, including an eighth-inning drive by Marco Scutaro that became the go-ahead double in the Toronto Blue Jays' 2-1 victory over New York on Tuesday night.

Blue Jays pound Beckett, Red Sox in 15-4 win (AP)

Josh Beckett missed his spots early and the Blue Jays made sure he didn't last long enough to find his control. Alex Rios had five hits, matching a club record with four doubles, and Toronto chased Beckett in the third inning of a 15-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. "He just made some mistakes early in the game and the guys hit him," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said.
