B.J. Upton began Tuesday apologizing for his "mental lapse" in Monday's game.

He ended it trying to explain a controversial call that Rays manager Joe Maddon labeled "unconscionable" and "fabricated."

In between, Upton and the Rays pulled off a rousing victory that left them tied with the Cubs for the best record in the majors, and surpassing the Angels as the American League's best team, with the potential for home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

"An unbelievable game," Carlos Pena said. "That was awesome. That win felt so good."

After Upton was called out for supposedly making an "attempt" to go to second after an infield hit, the Rays rallied in their typical thrilling style, scoring three runs in the eighth with one hit.
