Johnny Damon looked as down as the Yankees' season hopes appear yet again, his voice as soft as he wished his hands could have been when he let a ball bounce off of his glove in center field to help cost his team Tuesday's game.

"I just missed it," Damon said in front of the cameras gathered around him after the Yankees' 2-1 loss to Toronto. "You know, plain and simple. I missed two balls, and that's unacceptable."

Johnny Damon was left "baffled" by a pair of blunders in the outfield, the latest hit to the New York Yankees' fading playoff hopes. Damon allowed two balls to glance off his glove, including an eighth-inning drive by Marco Scutaro that became the go-ahead double in the Toronto Blue Jays' 2-1 victory over New York on Tuesday night.

The New York Yankees activated outfielder Hideki Matsui off the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Justin Christian to Triple-A on Tuesday. Matsui started as the designated hitter, batting seventh against the Toronto Blue Jays. He finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout and reported no pain. "Our plan is to play him every day," manager Joe Girardi said.
